Benkadi Group's story
The women of the group Benkadi are all married and average 43 years of age and three children living in traditional extended families in the village of Fantobougou, in Fana sub-prefecture, Region of Koulikoro (2nd administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The group members know one another through ties of kinship and community. They work in food service, and they do commerce in tubers and in clothing. The group members are now on their 12th solidarity loan, which will be used for buying clothing, tubers, and condiments. Ms. ROKIA SANGARE, a member of the solidarity group, intends to use her loan to buy some clothing. She gets her supplies of clothing most often in Bamako (capital of Mali). Accepting cash or credit from a customer base composed of women and men, she makes her retail sales locally and at the Fana market. She plans on making an average monthly profit of 40,000 francs CFA that will be used for covering day-to-day family expenses. The rest will be reinvested in her clothing business.
