Progresando En Valores 1, 2, 3 Group's story

Ysabel is the coordinator of her group, Progresando en valores 1, 2, 3 (progress in values). She makes her home in a simple structure with her long-term partner and four children. She says that her most difficult challenge is to finish building a bathroom in her house. In the meantime she continues to enjoy sewing. Ysabel is excited to be taking her first loan with Esperanza. She has had her business, which she started with some savings, for two years. She plans to use this loan to invest in her business by buying clothing and a sewing machine. She will use the profits to build a bathroom and a kitchen. Her dreams are to work hard and move her business forward, and with the help of God, she will. This Esperanza associate began with us because she wanted to invest in her business. Her story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's other Haitian and Dominican (many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti) clients. Her group is located in Samana, a lush rugged peninsula with a nascent tourism industry. This area, like nearly all impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic, suffers from unreliable electricity and running water (none of which is potable).
