Elsa Lucila's story
Elsa, 43, sells staple grocery items in the front part of her house. Her husband is a mason and together they have one son, who is 19 years old. They live in a canton called Playas ["Beaches"], which is one of Ecuador's tourist destinations and known for its great variety of seafood. Ten years ago, Elsa started her store in order to help her husband with household expenses. She set it up in the front part of her house so that she could dedicate time to her son as well. Little by little, she stocked up with merchandise and started working at 8:00 a.m. every day. At night, her son tends to the store so that she can make dinner. She will use this loan to buy rice, canned goods, sugar, etc. for her store. In the future, she hopes to fix up her house and to better-stock her store.
