Salome Moncerrate's story
Every fortnight, the members of 'Libertad #1' community bank meet in the city of Portoviejo, capital of Manabí, which has been known for many years as the 'city of the royal tamarind trees'. Here we meet 48 year-old Salome. She is married and has two children aged 22 and 18 from her relationship. Both of her children are at university. Her husband is a medical sales representative. Salome sells pharmaceutical products in the city of Portoviejo. She sells products such as alcohol, Merthiolate and gauze. She works together with her husband. He makes deliveries to pharmacies. Their business is in their home and they work on orders. They have a vehicle which they use to deliver their products. They work from Monday to Friday, from 8.00am to 6.00pm, and Saturdays until 1.00pm. They have been in this business for nearly 10 years. They get their supplies from a laboratory and also from a wholesaler's in Guayaquil. Salome will use this loan to buy gauze and supplies but especially anti-flu medicines which sell a lot over the winter. She has been a member of her community bank for 5 years and she likes the speed with which she can obtain loans. Her dream is for her children to become professionals.
