Las Iguanas (Portoviejo) Group's story
We come upon the Las Iguanas Communal Bank on 26 De Septiembre Street in the city of Portoviejo. The area around the bank is known as “Calle de las Iguanas” because so many of these little animals are found in the area and protected by the area’s inhabitants. Bank members meet every fifteen days. Even though this is their first loan cycle, this group of people is very united and its members very friendly. The members work in different activities, including: (business, sales, production and services). Among them is Mrs. Ana Cristina. She is 20 years old. She is in a common-law marriage that has produced a beautiful 5-month-old baby. She is in her fifth semester studying Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Manabí. Her husband works in an aluminum and glass workshop. Ana Cristina works in business, selling Avon, Sayce and Iebel products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes and ladies’ accessories). She works three to four hours every day depending on what she has to do. She accomodates her school and work schedule while also saving time for her little baby. She leaves her baby in the care of her mother while she does her work. Ana Cristina has been in this business for two years now; she says it has gone well for her. She gives her products on credit and collects payment every fifteen days. This loan is for buying products because she has several requests. She especially wants to buy products on sale, which she will then sell at the normal price, making a greater profit. Her dreams are to finish her studies and to be able to work in her profession.
