Mayra Jahaira's story
The members of the 'Mujer y Fortaleza' (Woman and Strength) community bank meet every fortnight in Los Jazmines, in the city of Portoviejo, the capital of Manabí, which has been known for many years as 'the city of the royal tamarind trees'. Here we meet Mayra. She is a pretty young lady who is 22 years old. She is single and lives with her sister and her grandmother. She is in her first year of a law degree at ULEAM. She also works as a secretary in a notary's office in the city of Portoviejo. This is her first loan cycle with the community bank and she is very happy. She likes the ease with which she can acquire a loan. As well as working as a secretary, Mayra is also a saleswoman. She sells ladies' clothes, purses and accessories. She sells them to her friends and university classmates in the evenings. She also sells her products on Saturday and Sunday mornings. She leaves the goods on credit and collects payment for them every week or every fortnight. She receives her products from Panama. A lady who lives there sends them to her. Mayra will use this loan to pay for the order which she is going to receive since she has to pay for her orders up front. Her dreams are to finish her university course and work in her chosen profession.
