Benkan Group's story
The women of the Benkan group are all married. They average 38 years of age and seven children each. They live in large traditional families in the city of San (in the Ségou region of Mali). They know each other as neighbors and relatives. They excel in the buying and selling food condiments and various small goods. Assa MORIKE T., president of the group, sells rice at the big market of San. She plans to buy three tons of rice. She gets her stocks from local rice growers and sells at retail, for cash. This is a very profitable business for her. She hopes to earn a monthly profit of 29,000 FCFA, while other members expect to make 27,000 FCFA each month, to be used to repay the loan and cover family expenses.
