Orquideas De Xenacoj Group's story

Olga, age 29, is one of the 32,000 disregarded women who participate in the “Microcrédito Plus” program of Puente de Amistad [Friendship Bridge]. She had the opportunity to graduate from secretary school and has worked occasionally. She is married and has two children (ages 3 to 10) and is motivated to generate income for her family. Olga has a tostada and nacho business. She sells in a stand in the market in her community. These appetizers are in high demand to accompany delicious "churrascos" [grilled meats]. Olga requests her fifth Kiva loan to buy nachos and cheese in bulk.

Olga and the other seven Maya Kaqchiqueles women are members of the communal bank “Orquideas de Xenacoj” of Puente de Amistad. One of the ways they empower themselves is by participating in monthly educational trainings, part of the “Microcrédito Plus” program of loans, education, and medical attention. The topics are relevant to their lives and essential for their success. They are drawn from four areas: health, family, women, and business. A facilitator designs the sessions and uses games, role play, images, and diagrams to share the information.

Kiva lenders, in association with Puente de Amistad, play a vital role in Olga's life. Thanks to people like each one of you, these women are creating paths to a better future!
