Ruth Y Esther 2 Group's story
Andrea is the coordinator of her group, Ruth y Esther 2. She makes her home here in a simple structure with her two children. She says that her most difficult challenge is to have a stable business. In the meantime, she plans to continue enjoying work. Andrea is excited to be taking her fourth loan with Esperanza after having successfully repaid her previous loan and grown her business. She has had her business for two years, starting with selling underwear. She plans to use this loan to invest in her business by buying shoes, accessories, underwear and an exhibitor. She will use the profits to buy school supplies, to invest in more products, and she is planning to buy a computer. She also wants to have telephone service and to have a store with all kinds of merchandise. This Esperanza associate began with us because she needed the loan for her business. Her story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican clients, many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti. Her group is located in Samana, a lush rugged peninsula with a nascent tourism industry. This area, like nearly all impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic, suffers from unreliable running water (none of which is potable) and electricity.
