A loan helped to buy animal feed and organic soil amendments.

Mujeres Emprendedoras Mayas Group's story

Elva is 46 years old. She lives in a rural area in the Department/State of Suchitepequez. She communicates in Spanish. She lives with her husband. She is a mother of 6 daughters who are older than 9 years old, and she is the grandmother of 3 children. Her older daughters have gone to school through grade 6.

She hopes that her two younger daughters can continue with a secondary education in the future. As her husband works as a laborer on a small farm, he does not earn sufficient money to cover the household expenses.

So, seven years ago, Elva decided to begin her own business of raising and selling pigs. In addition to this business, she also works in agriculture growing corn.

In order to increase the inventory of her businesses, she is requesting her first Kiva loan to invest in the purchase of animal feed, and also for organic soil amendments.

In the communal bank of "Puente de Amistad" the "Mujeres Emprendadoras Mayas" is made up of 11 women. Elva is one of the 32,000 women who form part of the "Microcredito Plus" program of Puente de Amistad. She and her co-members learn about the importance hygiene, nutrition, business administration, and making decisions.

The women make their loan payments at their monthly meetings and participate in educational training sessions (relating to family, women, business, health) that are vital for success.

Thank you to the Kiva lenders for contributing to the development of the entrepreneurial women.
