Fatima Del Carmen's story
Fátima Del Carmen P. lives in Charasol, which is part of the city of Azogues; the capital of the Cañar province, located along the river Paute. The area is characterized by its people who weave wool dresses, work in pottery, etc. Its church is located on the highest point and is the main tourist attraction. Fátima is 36 years old, is married and has three children, ages 17, 16, and 5. Her oldest son studies at university; her oldest daughter attends college, and her youngest daughter attends the local school. Her husband is out of the country, in search of a better future for the family. The home they live in is theirs and was built with sacrifice from both of them. Fátima is a homemaker who also does crafts in cloth and ceramic. She learned this trade by taking classes and she sells her items to her acquaintances in her spare time. This will be the fourth loan through the foundation and she tells us that her previous loans have helped improve the financial stability of their household, because of the easy payments. She will use the money from this loan, through Fundacion Espoir, to pay for her children’s tuition and also to buy supplies for her crafts. Her dream is to pay the debt that her husband took out for the trip and that he will be able to return soon so that the family can be together.
