Mujeres Trabajadoras Toliman Group's story

The traditional textiles of the Mayans in Guatemala are colorful, beautifully woven and embroidered with traditional symbols and designs. They are admired by travelers from all over the world. The artisans who make them can generate income to support their families and meet the educational needs of children. This is what Maria, 30, does to earn income. She is married and the mother of 2 children (ages 3 and 5). María weaves traditional blouses or "huipiles". She requests her second Kiva loan to buy a quantity of yarn of different colors. Maria wants to improve her standard of living and help her children with future school expenses.
María is one of the 8 women from the Puente de Amistad Community Bank located in the department / state of Sololá. They learn a lot in their monthly educational trainings, part of the "Microcredit Plus" program for loans, education, and health services. Topics such as budgeting, planning, investing, and saving help them with their businesses (textiles and banana sales), while other topics such as nutrition, health, hygiene, and the use of medicinal plants help them with their own lives and with their families. Every two months, they have access to health services.
Thanks to the Kiva lenders for their kindness in financing these loans!
