Lera Kelep's story

Lera Kelep lives in a rural suburb which is located 6 kilometres out of Port Vila, capital city of Vanuatu. Her community is very small, located beside a coastal area which makes her community landscape very rocky. The main industry is tourism, but due to the coronavirus pandemic it has been massively affected causing a lot of employment loss. Lera Kelep is 42 years of age who is happily married and has five children, they are of ages 24, 21, 19, 18 and 4. All her elder children are no longer in school except for her youngest. She lives with her family in a small shanty house.

Lera Kelep has requested a loan to pay for retail goods which will be stocked up in her small retail shop so she can continue to provide for her customers needs and wants. She wants to increase her stock as her community is quite far from the main shops and there is no paved roads but instead all transportation by foot. With her earned revenue, she will use to pay for her son's education for a bright future and also save up so she can purchase a deep freezer for her shop. Lera Kelep has had her shop for over 13 years now. This is her fourth loan with SPBD - Vanuatu. She has faithfully repaid her prior loans on a timely manner. Through her loans, Lera Kelep feels empowered to expand her business and become a successful businesswoman.
