A loan helped a woman-owned business offer quality bee supplies for beekeepers in Hawaii.

Susan's story

I am an educator who is passionate about bringing and creating community through agriculture and educational programs. I started teaching adults and children over 25 years ago about environmental issues. When I started teaching beginner beekeepers about the basics of beekeeping and providing quality equipment through my business, it was a natural fit. As a beekeeper, I noticed that the availability of equipment, as well as community-based classes, was not available in Hawaii. This inspired me to use my talents to create Bird and Bee Hawaii, LLC. I now currently own a bee barn and apiary which is located on 5 acres in Ahualoa, Honokaa, Hawaii. The bee barn has become a center or hub for beekeepers to learn about beekeeping as well as to purchase beekeeping equipment for their own apiaries. Bird and Bee Hawaii, LLC has recently expanded to start to offer classes and visits for tourists and to classrooms.
