A loan helped to purchase more green bananas and cassava.

Joan's story

Joan is 33 years old, married, and has four children, three of whom attend school. She lives in the town of Kalerwe in the Kawempe region of Uganda. For the past five years, Joan has been working hard to manage her grocery store, which sells raw food such as green bananas (plantains), cassava, and vegetables.

To help expand her business, Joan requested a loan from BRAC Uganda for 1,800,000 Ugandan Shillings, which she will use to purchase more green bananas and cassava. This loan will help Joan to generate greater profits and her production will increase and attract more revenue. She will be able to buy food for her family and clothes for her children. Joan hopes that in the future she will be able to build rentals and a residential house on her piece of land.

Joan is a member of BRAC's Microfinance program (MF). The program primarily serves small group members like Joan who do not have collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
