Monica's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped a widowed mom to purchase farming inputs such as fertilizers to boost her crop quality, earn more profit, and support her children.

Monica's story

Special people of Kiva!

The above picture is of Monica, a 66-year-old widowed mom of 5 children who has always struggled to make her dreams become a reality. She knows that this is not possible through magic but through hard work and determination. She was born in a family where farming skills were passed from one generation to another. She did not have any alternative way to make an income, so she chose to venture into farming.

Through continuous involvement in crop farming, Monica is able to provide a meal to her family three times in a day. Access to modern-quality farm inputs is the pillar of the agricultural revolution. However, in Kenya, a developing country, fertilizer and seed allocation by the government is way below the needs of farmers. Since Juhudi Kilimo, which is in partnership with Kiva, ventured into the affairs of smallholder farmers in Kenya, farmers can attest that there has been a significant improvement in input availability.

Monica is requesting this loan to buy farming inputs such as high-nutrient fertilizers and certified seeds to improve her farm yield and make more profits from sales to support her family. This loan will surely empower this hardworking woman.
