Benkadi I Group's story
The Benkadi group is made up of seven men who are all married and come from the village of Moribila Kafonon in the old "arrondissement" (district) of Kimparana in the San circle in the region of Ségou (the third administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They live in traditional families and average 37 years of age with at least seven children each. They cultivate exclusively corn. Since they are concerned about making their agricultural operations profitable, the group members decided to join Soro Yiriwaso's loan program this year. Surdouée D. is planning to use his loan to buy a sufficient quantity of seeds and intrants for his production of corn. After the winter season, the crops are stocked for a certain period of time to gain value before they are sold at the large market in Kimparana, on a retail basis (but also often wholesale) and for cash, to customers who generally come from the large towns. The members of the Benkadi group are expecting to make an income of between 175,000FCFA and 225,000 FCFA each after selling their agricultural products; this will be used for the repayment of their interest and the running costs of their families.
