A loan helped a woman-owned gardening business grow to meet demand.

Jacqueline's story

I've always loved the natural world and the beauty of watching things grow. Growing up in New York's Hudson Valley, I developed a penchant for gardening from both of my grandmothers who kept their yards full of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. I began studying at the City College of New York in 2010, where I received my Bachelor’s degree in French Language and Literature. Studying in New York City introduced me to people from every inhabited continent in the world and I was eager to explore. I took the opportunity to study in Paris for an academic year, cementing my love of interacting with different people across the globe. Once I moved to Brooklyn, I began connecting with other urban plant lovers on social media, eager to learn how to maintain my love of nature in a small and ill-lit apartment. Slowly but surely more and more of my plants began to survive and even thrive and I found myself now often giving advice to others. I fell in love with this community of urban nature lovers and eagerly continued collecting.
