Palo Gordo Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy chickens to butcher and sell.

Palo Gordo Group's story

Lusvi, who is 46 years old, lives in the Department of San Marcos with her husband and two youngest children.

Her three older children are married and have children of their own. She has five grandchildren. Her five children (8-28 yrs) are in or have attended school. The eldest went through nine years of schooling while the two youngest are in 1st and 6th grades.

For 20 years, Lusvi has been running her business buying and selling beef and chicken from her home. She is requesting her 1st Kiva loan to buy chickens to butcher and sell.

Although Lusvi has only a 2nd-grade education, because of her leadership abilities, she was elected President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Palo Gordo" that has 7 other members who all speak Spanish, the formal language of Guatemala. Lusvi is responsible for calling the meeting to order to first make loan payments, and then to participate in non-formal education sessions as part of the "Microcredit Plus" program of small loans, education and healthcare. Each month they learn from a Facilitator about important topics, like business management skills, family planning, good hygiene, as well as learning to develop self-esteem! Bi-monthly, Lusvi can visit a nurse for a check-up and cancer screening.

The ladies of "Palo Gordo" are very grateful for the generous support of Kiva investors. Thank you!!!
