A loan helped a black woman-owned business to empower and inspire at-risk youth through reading.

Allegra's story

I started reading at 2 years old, so I actually have no memories of learning to read, or not knowing how to. My mother says she sat down to teach me and I was just reading. She grabbed book after book trying to see if I was reciting from memory, but after pulling out a dinosaur book, she discovered I was actually reading and she was astounded. I was raised in a single-parent household in the city of Milwaukee. Like so many children from here, my mother was our sole provider because my father was in prison. I truly believe that the respect and appreciation for books and reading that my mother instilled in me and my siblings, was my saving grace. Writing was the natural progression of my love for reading. As I fell in love with series after series I began to believe that it might be possible for me to do the same thing, inspiring other children and giving them the same joy I feel every time I pick up a book. Nothing makes me feel more amazing than when a child sees themselves in a character that I’ve written about. I hope to continue to execute this vision for many decades TJ come.
