Mamie's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped launch my business and increase awareness in reducing poultry contamination.

Mamie's story

My name is Mamie. I grew up in Chicago's Robert Taylor Holmes housing projects. All my life I strive to do better and not become a part of my environment. Being raised in a family of 6, my parents stressed education and made it a priority. I was determined to go to college and learn, I furthered my education by receiving a Master's degree in Social Work. I currently work in the mental health and child welfare field and have been in this field for over 32 years, serving as a Director of Mental Health with the Chicago Department of Public Health. I believe that knowledge and empowerment go hand in hand with economic growth. Growing up in the projects has taught me the importance of having a strong community and its impact. From a young age, I always had an entrepreneurial spirit and I wanted to make a difference. I was motivated to invent a product that increases awareness around food safety and can ultimately be a resource that can be used in the community. My passion in life has been advocating to help empower those that are less fortunate. One of my long-term goals for the business is to start a program of training and education. I want to employ those that are homeless as well as unemployed mentally challenged adults to become self-sufficient. With Kiva's support, I can launch a business that will help restore and strengthen this population that I serve.
