Miggy Figgy's story
Hola! My name is Miguel, but most people know me as Miggy Figgy. I’m the creator, editor-in-chief, and publisher of Art Papi International, a new magazine based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Growing up in the town of Arecibo, magazines were my link to the world. They were my first love. In 1990, when I was 7, I created my first publication. Staying up all night, I hand-wrote articles and cut-up news stories from The San Juan Star. Topics included concert reviews, politics, cartoons, and who knows what else! What I remember most was how that spur-of-the-moment idea came about and the rush of writing away, pretending to be a stressed out-editor, working to deliver the news bright and early the next morning. I loved every single moment of it! Communication has been intrinsic in my life. I come from a family of small business owners. My grandfather owned a supermarket and knew the names of each client, their stories and always took a bit of time to spend with them. I inherited that ability to connect with people and the magazine is just that. It’s an intimate space for me to share stories with you. In 2006, I began working in magazines. After more than a decade as an editor and journalist in mostly fashion and design magazines, I needed to take my voice beyond clothes and objects of desire. In 2016, after moving back to Puerto Rico, the idea of Art Papi International came about after seeing the rapidly changing political climate on the island. Slowly, but surely, I started gathering content and contributors. Art Papi International is a place to find answers to daily questions from art, politics, cooking, photography, fashion, and astrology to feed that desire to see and learn something new.
