Las Granjeras Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to purchase rhinestones, lace and fabrics.

Las Granjeras Group's story

Friendship Bridge has many talented artisan women like 54-year-old Francisca, who sews colorful aprons (“delantales'') and beautifully embroidered blouses (“huipiles”). She proudly continues her ancestral tradition of sewing these prized textiles! Francisca is married with a 29-year-old daughter. Although she only had two years of a formal education, she made sure her daughter attended school for six years. Francisca saved enough to start a farming business (corn & beans).

She is requesting her first Kiva loan to purchase rhinestones, lace and fabrics.

Francisca is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Las Granjeras" or “The Farmers” located in the Department of Quiché. There are six other Maya K'iche' members who have businesses sewing clothes, raising pigs/laying hens, and farming corn and beans. They meet monthly to make loan payments and to participate in educational sessions that provide them relevant information about budgeting, investing, and saving. Since many of the women have little or no formal education, a facilitator, speaking Maya K'iche', engages them in the sessions using photos, diagrams and games. These sessions are part of the successful "Microcredit Plus" program of small loans, education and healthcare services. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for your generous support!
