A loan helped us market our revolutionary platform for online rated chess tournaments and notation analysis app.
I met my husband, Jim, when I was 15 at the Ankeny High School chess club. I had been born and raised in an up-and-coming suburb of Des Moines, IA, but Jim had a very different experience. He was the child of a teen mom, lost his father when he was three years old and had several run-ins with law enforcement as a teen. In 10th grade, his group of friends all dropped out of High School and he joined Chess Club. He became the top-rated player in the state and played for the school team in the state championship. On the day I came to chess club, he offered to play me blind which means he played by calling out the moves and never looking at the board. I fell for him and the game of Chess at the same time. Chess was able to bring Jim into the community and allowed him to show what he was truly capable of. In 2016, we founded Des Moines Chess Company with the intention of bringing the game of chess to kids in our own community. We discovered an amazing community of people that are passionate about chess and would love to contribute to growing the community. The friendships we have made with parents and individuals are profound and we are so thrilled to have the opportunity to give something back. When the pandemic hit, all of our in-person locations closed down. We attempted to transition to online chess but without a human connection, our players lost interest. Parents struggled to connect accounts and a large online event with over 2800 players experienced massive technical difficulties and was unable to be completed. It was clear that we had an opportunity to reach a new community of chess players across the globe.
