A loan helped a black-lesbian entrepreneur fulfill her dreams and create her legacy.
I am a young African American woman born and raised in East Texas. I was raised by a single mother who worked in a plywood plant. I watched her work day in and day out to provide for my brother and I. Witnessing her work so hard to the tune of 100+ hours every 2 weeks, I knew wanted something different. "Hair and beauty" is something that my family shares and bonded over. It is where my passion for beauty started. My dream was to own a beauty supply store with enough space to allow me to offer same-day beauty services to my customers. I always dreamed of being successful in the beauty industry and providing a legacy for my family. I started this quest to help me pursue my dreams. I have a passion for helping people and as a member of the first lesbian Greek-lettered organization, “service” is what we do. Being black AND a lesbian, I understand and know what it feels like to be looked at differently. Attending cosmetology school allowed me to meet people from all walks of life and explore the various levels of the beauty industry. That is where my love for helping people feel beautiful went to another level. This experience has been my fuel for wanting to open a beauty supply store. My vision will allow me to minister to others through the world of beauty. My store will not only be creating a family legacy but will help others be and live in their most authentic selves.
