A loan helped a black and women-owned business with the start-up cost of an Acupuncture and wellness center.
My beautiful mother Connie McCoy had many ailments and pain. She found relief and help with herbs, nutritional supplements, and what we may call “Alternative medicine”. My mom would visit her Acupuncturist, Chiropractor, and other practitioners regularly. While suffering my own health concerns like panic attack disorder and irregular menstruation my mom introduced me to Acupuncture and Chinese herbs. While my MD doctor didn't understand me and made me feel like it was “all in my head”, the Acupuncturist explained some of my symptoms with great accuracy and gave me herbs, acupuncture treatment, and nutritional advice that improved my conditions. Years later my mom's chronic condition worsened and she was unable to pay for her “Alternative Medicine”. This sparked a desire to become an Acupuncturist and help her. I completed 5 years of school and received my Master's in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I am also a Diabetes Peer Educator, I teach, facilitate diabetes support groups, and navigate patients with diabetes in Oakland, Ca at Roots Community Health Center. My Master's thesis was on a comprehensive guide to treating Type 2 Diabetes with Traditional Chinese Medicine. I am a published author and have written a 60-page ebook on using TCM to help with insomnia. I got the opportunity to see my mom while I was an intern in the clinic at my acupuncture graduate school. I was able to help her with her pain, insomnia, and constipation due to various medications. Unfortunately, she passed away in my last year of school. My motivation to help others with this amazing medicine continues and she was very proud of the work that I was accomplishing. I will continue my education while running my private acupuncture wellness center and pursue my Doctorate in Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine starting in January 2022.
