My name is Yemisi a Nigerian-born, New England-raised New Yorker, and the founder of Egunsi Foods — a Harlem, New York-based company highlighting West African culture through the region’s most beloved, authentic flavors. Moved to the US from Nigeria as a teenager, attended UMass Amherst, and after graduating, I began a corporate career in retail buying and financial planning in NYC. Throughout my schooling and early career, I found joy while hosting dinner parties for my friends, featuring my favorite West African dishes — which soon turned into pop-up events, corporate and private catering gigs. In 2015, I decided to make my passion project a full-time career and left my job as a financial planner to launch Egunsi Foods. After several years of careful development and market research through personal chef work, and multiple corporate catering contracts, including large-scale companies like Maverick Capital and Droga5, I debuted my first line of refrigerated, packaged West African soups at Whole Foods Market Harlem in 2017. Egunsi Foods has grown to become a seminal brand in the packaged food space as the only West African packaged soup on the US market, reflecting consumer demand for authentic, African flavors and nutritious ingredients in a convenient, ready-made format.
