Marta's story

Marta Eugenia L. L. is a 43 year old woman who lives with her husband and five children in the community of Canalete, which is located in Upala, Alajuela Province. This place is located in a semi-mountainous area where the main business activities mostly revolve around livestock breeding and agriculture. In this community there are great opportunities to develop and establish micro-enterprises, particularly in the agriculture and retail sectors.

Several years ago Doña Marta decided to start her own business, so she bought a cottage next to her house and rents it out to students and tourists in the area. This provides her with a source of income that will allow her to move her children forward. However, due to the lack of maintenance, the cottage is in very bad condition. It needs to be repaired so that it can be rented out and continue generating income. For this reason, Marta needs a loan of 617,000 CRC to buy windows, doors, and wood to repair the kitchen and fix other details that are lacking so that the cottage can be used.

Doña Marta is a member of the Canalete Communal Credit Enterprise, one of 100 member organizations that make up EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be her third loan and she hopes to continue growing on a personal and financial level. She is also an active participant in her local credit organization.
