El Xab Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy more chickens and turkeys, as well as food, vaccines, and vitamins.

El Xab Group's story

Despite the high level of unemployment, the Guatemalan population has found their own spaces to acquire income and provide their families with basic living conditions. The story of 52-year-old Blanca is the example of a visionary woman who throughout her life has traded raising and selling turkeys and chickens. She is a married woman with no education and a mother of 4 children over the age of 25. Blanca's husband works at the energy company. Thanks to the income obtained, they have been able to provide secondary education to all their children.

To continue expanding the business, Blanca requests the 4th loan with Kiva. With her financing, she will buy more chickens and turkeys, as well as food, vaccines, and vitamins.

Blanca is the president and one of the 8 members of the Puente de Amistad “El Xab” Community Bank. All of them live in the Department / State of Retalhuleu. They learn to budget and plan through monthly trainings given by a facilitator from the institution. Since most of them have little or no formal education, these trainings are essential. They also receive information about their rights and empowerment. Puente de Amistad calls this effective combination of non-formal education, health service, and small loans “Microcredit Plus.” Blanca and the rest of her classmates apply what they learn in their businesses selling food, raising animals, and selling clothes. These women see a brighter path thanks to the support of Kiva's lenders.
