Johel's story

Johel Jiménez Espinoza is 31 years old and lives with his wife and son in a community called Coquital. Coquital is located in the Los Chiles area, in the province of Alajuela; this community is in a mountainous area and is very close to the country’s northern border. His main economic activities are ranching and farming, specifically, growing staple grains and oranges. Johel also has his own business, a grocery store (“Pulpería”) where he sells all types of products to members of the community. This activity has allowed him to develop economically. However, Johel now has more responsibilities since the recent birth of his first child. That is why Johel needs another activity to generate income. He thought a recreation center would be a good idea, since nothing like that exists in his town. Johel needs a loan of ¢619,000 (619,000 colones) so that he can purchase a pool table and install it in his business. This would allow Johel to offer his customers an additional service and generate more income, and make it possible for Johel to spend more time with his son and provide the best for him. Johel is a member of the Empresa de Crédito Comunal Rapicrédito Progreso Futuro Coquital, one of EDESA’s 100 member organizations in Costa Rica. This will be Johel’s first loan and he hopes to use it to improve his business every day.
