A loan helped to buy vitamins, fruit and vegetables for her delicious fruit juices.

Laguna Las Garzas Group's story

Although the married 42-year-old Marta has no formal education, she is the creative and successful owner of a business making/selling delicious fruit juices in her neighborhood from 5:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Her business has made it possible for her to send her six children (10-24 years) to school. Her youngest two are in the fourth and ninth grades, and the eldest two are studying to be teachers. Her husband sews shirts and T-shirts.

Marta wants to grow her business, so is requesting her sixth Kiva loan to buy vitamins, fruit and vegetables to make more healthy juices and earn additional income.

Marta is the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Laguna las Garzas" or “Lagoon of the Egrets (Herons)” located in the Department of Quiché. Each month, Marta calls the other six K'iche'-speaking members to order. She then asks them to make loan payments from their businesses raising animals (pigs, chickens, turkeys), selling traditional used clothing, or natural fruit juices, making snacks, or selling chicken and fried potatoes from a cart.

After the payments are made, they participate in educational sessions that are part of the "Microcredit Plus" program of loans, education and healthcare services. The topics range from learning good business management skills, to learning to be empowered and have good self-esteem, to good daily hygiene. Bimonthly, they receive basic healthcare services from a visiting nurse who speaks their Mayan language.

Thank you!
