Polohiva's story

Polohiva is a 65-year-old mother of nine and a wife to a farmer. She and her husband with their youngest daughter live at their own home while the rest of their children have had their own families and created their own homes. She is a weaver, and she has been a weaver for more than 30 years. She earns money and provides for her family through weaving. With three other women, they perform weaving and they weave from Monday to Friday every week. With her weaving alone, she is able to earn enough to build a new house for them to live in. She weaves mats and taovala, using white pandanus only. She receives great benefits from weaving in a group, because it enables her to finish faster and weave more. Polohiva is applying for a loan to buy pandanus for her weaving and also help with building their new house.
