A loan helped us to re-open and overcome business challenges posed by the Covid 19 crisis.
Both my husband and I are Native American originally from the Central Coast of California. We grew up in the town of Morro Bay before it became a place where the upper class retires. Both our families have a long history in the region through our Native grandmothers and our Spanish and Italian grandfathers. Our families are still almost all there. In 2003 the grocery union that I was a member of went out on strike and we were financially unable to remain in our hometown. We came to Missouri with my mom Shirley, who had recently lost my stepdad, to start fresh and to be able to have our own business and to prosper. Thus A New Chapter was born. We opened our bookstore in 2005 without any previous bookstore knowledge and are one of only a few businesses locally that have lasted more than 5 years. Everything we learned about books we have taught ourselves. We have also established an Amazon storefront that still has 5 stars after 12 years. Currently, we have been closed for the past year to the public relying on Amazon sales to pay all the business expenses. We still have people daily asking "When are you going to re-open"? and that is where we are now. Kiva loans have helped us in the past to assist us over humps that have occurred be it storm damage or just wanting to increase our stock of books. This loan will be to make some needed repairs to our air conditioner. It gets sweltering here and also to refresh our inventory as we have been closed for almost a year due to the Covid pandemic. Also to hire some local help to stock and clean.
