Women's Unity Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!
A loan helped to pay for improved seed, organic inputs and tractor rentals, which will allow these farmers to escape subsistence by farming a larger area with higher yields.
Women's Unity Group's story
Ramatu K. (first on the left), featured borrower of Women's Unity Group, would like to thank all the Kiva lenders sincerely for their first loan. It enabled the group's members to break free from the local lenders, who were charging them nearly 100% interest. As a result, all of the group members have fully recovered their businesses, have repaid their first loan and are successfully farming again. The group is now seeking a second loan to expand further. The global COVID-19 pandemic is causing food shortages in some areas of Sierra Leone, as imported rice becomes more scarce. A second Kiva loan will not only empower these women further but also will enable them to take advantage of the current market for rice and enhance food access in Sierra Leone at a time when this is badly needed. The profits will be used to ensure all of the members' children go to school and will also be used by the group to create a support fund for young female farmers.
