Las Orquideas De Maquivil Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy more laying hens for her poultry business.

Las Orquideas De Maquivil Group's story

Arely is a single, 40-year-old mother of a 22-year-old son. She lives with her father. For four years, she's had a poultry business and has 60 laying hens. She sells them live and also sells cartons of eggs. She also manages her convenience store. This is her first Kiva loan and with it she'll buy 50 more laying hens. Her goal is to increase sales and income.

As president of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, Las Orquideas de Maquivil, Arely calls the monthly meetings to order. There are 11 other women in the group. They make loan payments and then participate in useful educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services.

A facilitator, who speaks their Maya “Mam” language, as well as Spanish, designs these trainings and uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share information. The women have little or no formal education. Arely only went to school for a year. Topics are drawn from four areas: health, women’s issues, family matters and business. Often the women share what they learn with family and friends who also have limited educational opportunities.

From a rural area in the Guatemalan Highlands, two hours from the closest town, Arely and her friends send their gratitude to Kiva lenders from all parts of the world. Thank you to each of you!
