A loan helped to buy new white and patterned fabric, fabric paints and sewing materials to stock her handicraft room.

Mathilda's story

Mathilda is 57 years old, married and has two grown children. She lives with her family in their own home in a small, rural community located seven kilometers from Port Vila. The Ni-Vanuatu people rely on their locally farmed foods as a means of earning an income and feeding themselves, so farming is good, steady work.

Mathilda, however, has been sewing for over twenty years now, a skill she learned when she was in school. She is a member of a group of women who love sewing in their rented handicraft rooms located in the heart of Port Vila. She advertises her business through her customers and by word by mouth.

Loving what she does, Mathilda is motivated to expand her business so she can become a successful businesswoman. She has asked for a loan to help her buy new white and patterned fabric, fabric paints and sewing materials to stock her handicraft room so she can better serve her customers.

Mathilda dreams of growing her business so she can employ jobless youths or relatives to help her meet her customers’ orders. With her profits she will build a better house for her family.
