Mele's story

Mele is 48 years old and a mother of seven, grandmother of seven and the wife of a farmer. She and her husband live with their remaining five children at their own home. Mele is a member of a group of women in their village who once a week make tapas, a traditional practice that earns money for many women.

Mele designs her tapas with her own designs and some traditional logos then sells them to earn money for her family. Her business is her family's primary source of income. Other women hire her to design their tapas and she earn extra income from it. Tapas are made in two ways. It is either made with pure soft tapas, or it is made from soft tapas and tapa paper. Mele will use this loan to purchase herself both mulberry and tapa papers for her business.
