Las Florecitas De San Cristobal Group's story

At 45 years of age, Marta is separated and determined to successfully support her 4 children (ages 12-28 years). The youngest is still in school and the older ones completed 2nd and 6th grades.

Although Marta is not able to read, she has a successful weaving business. She employs 4 women who weave "huipiles", the traditional, colorful blouses of Guatemala. These beautiful blouses have the designs and colors of San Andrés Itzpa, in the department of Chimaltenango. Marta is requesting a Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of thread in various colors.

Marta is the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Las Florecitas de San Cristóbal" that has 7 members with businesses weaving "huipiles", selling second hand clothing, or animal husbandry. They enjoy meeting monthly to support one another, make payments on their loans and then participate in educational sessions on an aspect of 4 topics: business, health, family, women. Recent subjects have been about good use of capital (loans) through budgeting and planning ahead. Every other month, the ladies are able to meet with a visiting nurse who provides basic health services, such as family planning, exams and screenings. This is especially important as the health care system in Guatemala is very poor.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for providing the much needed support so that the ladies of "Las Florecitas de San Cristóbal” can step into a brighter and successful future!
