A loan helped to buy fabric to transform into beautiful traditional clothing to sell.

Sabias Group's story

Francisca, a 39-year-old married mother of four children (ages 12-20), is very productive with two businesses. Five years ago, she opened a convenience store. She is well known in her community in the department/state of Solola as an accomplished seamstress sewing traditional skirts as well as colorful aprons and blouses. She sells in the large market in San Pedro La Laguna two times each week. Some of her income goes toward the education of her children who are in primary and secondary schools. Francisca is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more fabric as well as traditional skirts.

As if having two businesses and taking care of her household isn’t enough, Francisca is also the treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Sabias” or “The Wise Ones.” There are five other Maya K’iche ladies in the group. The women have convenience stores; sell chicken, vegetables, or clothing; and also embroider traditional blouses with cross-stitch.

They learn to manage their businesses at their monthly educational training sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and health care. Other topics are related to family, women, and health. Every two months, the women have access to preventive health care services, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and health care.

For women like Francisca with their one year of formal education, this program is a passage to a more successful future. Kiva investors are much appreciated. Thank you!
