Benkadi 2 Group's story

Benkadi 2 is a grouping of married women in the village of SESSO in the prefecture of San, which lies in the region of Ségou (the fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The women live in traditional families, average 49 years of age and have an average of at least five children each. They cultivate primarily peanuts. Since they are concerned with making their agricultural operations profitable, the group's members decided to join Soro Yiriwaso's loan program and are on their first farming loan. Aissata Seydou D., who is the president of the group, is planning on using her loan to buy a sufficient quantity of peanut grains, as well as small equipment and agricultural inputs, at the large market in Tene. After the winter the crop is stocked for a certain amount of time in order to gain value before being sold at the large market in Tene, Mopti and surrounding markets, on a retail basis (and often on a wholesale basis) for cash to a customer base originating primarily from large towns. The group members are expecting to make a profit of 15,000 to 36,000FCFA, following the sale of their agricultural products; this will be used to repay the interest on the loan and to cover the daily family expenses.
