Benkadi 1 Group's story
The Benkadi group is made up of married women from the village of Dangasso in the San district, a region of Segou (the fourth administrative area of Mali). They live in traditional families. They are of an average age of 39 and have a minimum of 7 children each. They grow fonio, sorrel, and gombo. In the interest of improving the performance of their farms, the members of the group decided to join the Soro Yiriwaso loan group 2 years ago. Having repaid the previous loans correctly they are requesting their second rural loan. Fatoumata C. intends to use her credit to buy a sufficient quantity of fonio seeds, small farming machinery, and farming supplies, such as seeds, fertiliser, and other products, at the market in San. After the winter period the harvest will be stored for a certain period of time to appreciate in value before being sold at the markets of San, Dah and the surrounding area, retail (often wholesale) for cash to customers who usually come from the large towns. Fatoumata C. hopes to make a profit of 35 000 FCFA after the sale of the products, which will be used for the repayment of the interests of the loan and for daily family expenses.
