A loan helped to purchase dried hibiscus tiliaceus fiber and pandanus leaves for making woven goods.

Nanette Leo's story

Nanette Leo is a 59-year-old mother of four grown children. She is married to a local farmer who makes his living on Santo Island, which is located on the northern part of Vanuatu. Nanette Leo currently lives with her son at her home that is located in a rural suburb that is a 15-minute drive from the international airport in Port Vila. Her community is large and the main industry is agriculture. Since the people of Vanuatu rely on agriculture for food and income, they are able to make a satisfactory living.

Nanette Leo requested a loan to purchase dried hibiscus tiliaceus fiber and pandanus leaves so that she can stock up on materials for weaving beautiful handbags, hats, and mats for her customers. She wants to produce more goods since the government of Vanuatu is considering exporting these types of local products to other countries. With the revenue she earns, Nanette Leo would like to begin teaching weaving classes. She plans to build a house where she can conduct her classes.

Nanette Leo has been weaving for more than 20 years, having been taught by her mother. Empowered by her love of weaving and the help of the government, she will be able to expand her business and become a successful entrepreneur.
