A loan helped an experienced urban beekeeper expand his bee livestock for greater business stability.
I have been keeping bees for 25 years, then moved to full-time professional beekeeping in 2009 when the Great Recession suggested that being an urban farmer might offer greater prosperity in a bouncing economy. Best move I've ever made! I've been able to take my remarkable San Francisco kinds of honey to several of the best Bay Area Farmers' Markets, such as the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, and the Clement Street Farmers Market. My jars of honey are unique artisanal treasures, and customers claim it does wonder for their allergies. Of course, they want as local as possible. I function as a sharecropper, bringing hives into people's backyards. I do all the work, give the host honey as rent, and I take the rest of the honey to the farmer's market. I know how to keep my bees alive and prosperous, and at the same time, I work to create queen bee genetic lines which are parasite and disease resistant. Distributed throughout the city, my bees do a fabulous job of pollinating the many fruit trees, parklands, and gardens.
