A loan helped to buy a wooden floor loom and thread.

Las Estrellas Group's story

Magdalena, a 23-year-old single woman, has the reputation of being one of the most talented textile artisans in her area. Her textile business is a family one, and 2 of her siblings work with her on 3 floor looms. On a weekly basis, they deliver 7 beautifully woven traditional skirts or “cortes.” Magdalena’s business is growing. She is requesting her 2nd Kiva loan to buy another wooden floor loom and thread in various colors. She feels happy because, thanks to her income, she is able to cover her own expenses and those of her parents.

This enterprising young woman is also the proud President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Estrellas” or “The Stars” in the department/state of Quiche. There are 6 other women in the group who live high up in the mountains. Although none of them have a formal education, they are smart, determined, and eager to learn new information. At their monthly meetings, they participate in educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and health care services. Topics are drawn from 4 areas: business, health, family, and women. They apply what they learn about business immediately to their textile businesses. This month’s training emphasized the importance of saving. Every two months, the women have access to basic health care services.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for your kindness. Magdalena and her friends are poised to step into a brighter future because of your participation in their lives!
