Los Canastitos Group's story
The Canastitos Group is made up of three hard-working, determined, and enterprising women from Masaya, a region considered to be the cradle of Nicaraguan folklore. The department of Masaya is known for having the greatest expression of traditional Nicaraguan arts, and for producing a great variety of arts and handicrafts. The coordinator of this group is María de los Ángeles D. Castillo, who owns a small sewing workshop where she makes typical clothing items like cotton coats, blouses, long dresses, guayaberas [short-sleeve, button-down shirts for men], etc. She started this business five years ago, making just a few products. Now, she has three employees as well as her two children helping her. D. will invest this loan in buying materials, especially fabrics and thread, so that she can keep progressing in her business. The other members of the group are Teresa del Carmen R. S., who makes slipcovers, sheets, and baby clothing, and Rosa T., who sells plantains and enchiladas.
