Thierry's story

Thierry is a refugee of Burundian descent living at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. He is a father of three, a husband and a skilled and experienced entrepreneur who owns and runs a grocery store in camp. His business is strategically and conveniently located to serve both his fellow refugees and the host community with quality and affordable grocery and food items. Thierry and his family fled the violence in his native home as a result of political instabilities in 2017 and after resettling at the camp, soon started the grocery store business as a way of providing a stable means of livelihood for his family. He has become well-known within the camp and the business has gained a good reputation and continues to amass a strong base of loyal customers. The store additionally provides a means of livelihood to three employees who help in its running. Thierry largely attributes his business success to the the initial loan he received from AEC. He is now looking to getting a subsequent one to increase his working capital to enable him purchase additional grocery and food items stock for the store. This will enable him continue providing the community with more consumption options, and at the same time, allow him continue providing for his family.
