Benkadi 5 Group's story
The Benkadi 5 group comes from the Married Women's Association of the village of Dah Manakina in the prefecture of San, Ségou region (fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The members live in traditional families. They have an average age of 37 and on average at least 6 children each, and they grow peanuts. Wishing to make their agricultural enterprises more profitable, the members of the group decided to join the loan institution Soro Yiriwaso three years ago. After having reimbursed their preceding loans correctly, they are on their third agricultural loan for the growing season. Fatoumata Konaté intends to use her share of the loan to buy a sufficient quantity of peanut seeds and various small implements and agricultural entrants, purchasing exclusively at the big open-air market of San city. During the off-season, she warehouses her harvest for a certain time so that it grows in value before selling it at the Dan and San markets and in surrounding marketplaces, retail (or often wholesale) for cash to a clientele generally coming from the big cities. After their produce is sold, the members of the group each expect to make a profit of 25,000 F CFA which will be used to reimburse the interest on the loan and for on-going family expenses., like the other members of the group, expects to make a profit of 35,000 F CFA which will be used to reimburse the interest on the loan and for on-going family expenses.
