A loan helped to buy high quality thread.

Nueva Florecita Group's story

Traditional Guatemalan textiles are filled with colorful woven and embroidered designs. They are proudly worn by Maya women who are proud of their cultural traditions and admired by international travelers. Tomasa, a 39-year-old married mother of 4 children, aged 11-19, who attend elementary and secondary schools. Her husband sells cell phone accessories on the street. Several years ago, Tomasa realized that she needed to create more income and started a business weaving traditional colorful blouses on a backstrap loom. These blouses or “huipiles” have the designs of Chichicastenango. They are designed beautifully and well made. Tomasa has a good reputation. It takes a lot of time to weave/embroider a “huipil” and she is able to deliver 3 of them each month. She is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy high-quality thread.

“Nueva Florecita” is the name of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank that Tomasa and 7 of her friends have formed. They live in a rural area in the department/state of Quiche. The women meet monthly, make loan payments, and participate in educational sessions (health, family, women, business) designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, games, and role-playing to share information Every other month, they have access to basic health care services. This effective combination of loans, education, and health care is called “Microcredit Plus”.
