but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy a variety of high-quality fabrics and thread.

Mujeres Emprendedoras Group's story

The techniques of weaving and embroidering traditional textiles are passed down through the generations. Maria, a married mother of 8 children over the age of 8, learned as a child how to weave on a backstrap loom. She speaks Spanish with her Maya “K’iche” accent. She sits on the floor, arranging the various colors of thread to weave and then chooses the perfect colors to use in embroidering her traditional blouses or “huipiles.” She is very popular in her community for her expertise in the unique and colorful “huipiles” of the department of Solola. Demand is high, and Maria is requesting her 2nd Kiva loan. She will buy a variety of high-quality fabric and thread in various colors.

Maria, along with 5 other ladies, is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Emprendedoras” located in a rural area in the department/state of Solola. Although many of them have little or no formal education, they continue to learn about relevant topics related to business, health, family, and women in their monthly educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge. A Facilitator uses pictures, diagrams, role playing, and games to share the information. Every two months, the women have access to basic health care services, delivered by a visiting nurse who speaks their language.

Maria and her friends are opening doors into a brighter future. Thank you, Kiva investors, for your generosity in funding their much appreciated loans!
