Ledis Maria's story

Ledis has a business selling hardware and other goods in the neighborhood of Barranquilla near one of Colombia's greatest soccer stadiums, “El Estadio metropolitano D. Barranquilla”. Her business has generated employment opportunities, staying open from 10am to 11pm daily. Ledis started her business in 1993 selling books in downtown Barranquilla, only later moving to her current neighborhood and changing her business model to focus on goods like stationary, hair ribbons and clips, wrapping paper and cosmetics. She also began to gradually add in hardware. Her main clients are locals and pedestrians who pass by her shop. She generally has to restock the store every two days. This loan will be Ledis's fourth with Fundación Mario Santo Domingo and she plans to use it to buy a display case. She also plans to buy clothes in bulk (with cash) and, thereby, receive a better price: savings she can then pass on to her clients. Since starting out with FMSD, she has seen her family's income increase which is why she's so excited about continuing to growing in her large neighborhood. She already enjoys a solid reputation there and is surrounded by businesses and supermarkets attracting more potential clients.
